An award for clean and profitable solutions.

This follows an assessment performed by external independent experts and based on verified standards. It is thereby joining the #1000solutions challenge, an initiative by the Solar Impulse Foundation to select solutions that meet high standards in profitability and sustainability and present them to decision-makers to fast-track their implementation.

Solar Impulse Foundation also attribute HydroFLOW® water conditioners as a contributor toward meeting the United Nations Sustainable Goals Framework.

HYDROPATH Technology

HYDROPATH Technology are a British company operating across the globe, dedicated to the promotion of non-chemical water treatment to prevent limescale and other mineral scales, combat biofouling and improve filtration.

HydroFLOW® products are available for systems ranging from domestic water heaters to power station cooling towers.

Part of the application process was the submission of a detailed case study to demonstrate the solution’s benefits. The submitted case study described an installation on the headquarters of a Fortune 100 company in the USA.

The goal was to reduce water and chemical use, to cut down on maintenance and energy, and to extend equipment life. The unit was installed on the open loop condenser of two 1000 ton cooling towers.

An audit compared the historical data from the previous two years to assess a year’s operation with HydroFLOW®.

As well as reductions in the antiscalant and biocide chemicals used, ensuring the heat exchange surfaces were free from deposits improved efficiency, and allowed the tower to run with higher cycles of concentration, reducing water and sewage use.

The results of the trial included:

  • Saving on freshwater and sewage water of 85%
  • Reduction of energy consumption (heating fuel and electricity) due to improvement in efficiency of exchangers of 10%
  • Reduction of chemical antiscalant and biocide of 75%

Annual savings on water and energy use were $73,400 using a simple payback analysis, with a positive Net Present Value of $4,760,200 over the building’s 50 year useful life.

To receive the “Solar Impulse Efficient Solution” Label, the HydroFLOW® product was thoroughly assessed by a pool of independent experts according to 5 criteria covering the three main topics of Feasibility, Environmental and Profitability.

All labelled solutions are part of the #1000solutions portfolio that will be presented to decision-makers in business and government by Bertrand Piccard, Chairman of the Solar Impulse Foundation.

The aim of this initiative is to encourage the adoption of more ambitious environmental targets and fast-track the implementation of these solutions on a large scale.

Who are the Experts evaluating the solutions?

The Solar Impulse Experts community is a pool of voluntary assessors with 5 years of academic or business experience in one of the 5 SDGs of interest and 3 years in related sub sectors.

They come from various backgrounds, companies and world regions, having in common passion for sustainable solutions and the will to contribute to the achievement of the 1,000 Solutions Challenge!
